the most important program in Hariri Foudation . It makes it possible for
students to secure loans that cover all or most of their tuition fees,
housing accomodation, transportation,
Lebanon 20.322 In addition, 2.800 students joined the Special
English Training Program. Lebanon 12.258 Total 16.525 Of these there are 4.000 engineers and more than 1.500 doctors. The percentages in the other major fields of specialization are as follows: Business Administration 22%
Still others have either discontinued their course of study and dropped out or have failed to meet promotion or graduation requirements, this made it possible for Hariri Foundation to grant their loans to new applicants who could benefit from them. Lastly, other’s course of study was restricted to language proficiency, or they joined the Lebanese University and were therefore in no need of loans. ...........As a result of the civil war in Lebanon the level of foreign language acquisition suffered a lot, and consequently it affected the young generation drastically. Students ended being deficient in English and failed to meet minimum for admission. They were thus barred from joining the university though they qualified for admission in all other respects. To remedy this situation, Hariri Foundation devised intensive language programs to make it possible for students to overcome the language barrier as a prerequisite for university admission. This program comprised the following components. ..........In collaboration with AUB, the British Council, AMIDEAST, and the Lebanese American University (LAU), Hariri Foundation managed in 1985 to send its students to the above institutions to become proficient in English. The program at AUB is unique because Hariri foundation has arranged to have the SET program instructors join teacher training sessions in Cyprus every summer. Trainers are usually American or British TEFL experts. .........Hariri Foundation experts prepared this program and implemented it in 1986-87, its aim was to help students continue their education in French in Lebanon or in France. Hariri Foundation had previously sent 2.500 students in two groups to France to improve their French; and quite a number joined French universities, whereas others returned to Lebanon and continued their course of study here, this program was implemented in two centers: in Tripoli and in Beirut. Both centers were provided with the most advanced audio-visual equipment and were run by highly trained instructors in France. The length of period one stays in this program is ten months (40 weeks) with an average of 40 sessions, half of which is devoted to intensive French language learning; the other half, for mathematics, sciences, with emphasis on laboratory applications. 2777 students benefited from this program in France and 710 in Lebanon. Some of them joined French universities and technical institutes (IUT), whereas the others joined similar institutes in Lebanon. The program was discontinued in 1991 after the security condition in the country was restored. Thus, Hariri Foundation concentrated on granting loans to those students who continued their education in Lebanon. ..........In 1985 Hariri Foundation sent 144 university graduates, mainly engineers, to be retrained and to keep abreast of new developments in their respective fields after they had been given intensive English training. After one year of its inception, the program was discontinued as most of the applicants preferred to do their MA programs in their universities. Hence, there was no real need to continue such a program. ...........Hariri Foundation designed this program specifically for the benefit of the Lebanese doctors who had completed their university education abroad and wished to continue their specialization in Lebanon. This program prepared the participants both linguistically and academically. It started operating in 19987 in collaboration with the AUB Medical School but was later housed in Makassed Association Hospital. However, it continued to function under the administration of AUB itself. The period of study in this program, which combined theory and practice, is one year leading to postgraduate study in medicine. The number of those who have benefited from this program thus far is 126 doctors. Planning and Guidance to Make Available Various Fields of Specialization .........Having established a system for granting loans, Hariri Foundation turned its attention to having a guidance program which will inform the many applicants of what is available on the market and what the needs of the labor market are. In spite of the unavailability of the required statistics necessary for future planning, Hariri Foundation took the following steps to ensure the attainment of the objective.
The Hariri Foundation established the Career Guidance Center in 1985 in collaboration with AUB to offer career counseling services to Hariri students enrolled in the English Program set at AUB. The center also offered career counseling services for Hariri schools students in particular then to students from other schools in Lebanon in general. In 1996, the Career Guidance Center moved back to Hariri Foundation and became a part of its administrative channel under the title of Career Guidance Department. Thus, the target of the Career Guidance Department at the Hariri Foundation became the intermediate and secondary students who come either individually or in groups to receive career counseling where the role of career guidance is vital for these students to help them discover the different aspects of their personalities through knowing their interests, skills, work values, and abilities. Moreover, students can explore the various university and vocational majors in Lebanon through visual and written material, in order to enable them to choose the major that suits their future career prospects where all these services are free of charge. Concerning the career counseling sessions, they consist of three stages namely, career exploration, self-awareness, and decision making: During the exploration stage, students receive information concerning university and vocational majors in addition to brochures that provide them with ample information about majors in Lebanon like the nature of the major, admission requirements to the different universities, years of study, language of study, degrees received, as well as the names of universities or vocational institutions that teach this major. The self-awareness stage encompasses introducing the counselees to various aspects of their personality namely their interests, skills, work values, academic abilities, and personality characteristics as well as the work environment they like to work in to enable them, through the help of their counselor, to choose the university or vocational major that best suits them. The Holland Self Directed Search is also administered to some counselees to help them know more about their interests & skills in order to find out their personality type and the work environment corresponding to this personality in addition to suggesting occupations that suits the students’ personality type. Intermediate students receive in addition to the above services information about the new Lebanese curriculum and the different branches of baccalaureate available to them. They are also informed about the types of majors each branch leads to so they might be able to choose the branch they prefer in school or choose a vocational major if they prefer to continue their studies at the vocational level after the Brevet. Career information: The Career Guidance team prepares all the material distributed to students during counseling mainly the University majors and Technical Majors Guides which are updated annually and offer students information about universities and vocational institutions in Lebanon and the majors available in them. Moreover, around eighty brochures are available to students in Arabic to provide ample information on university majors like their nature, courses of study, names of universities that teach these majors, admission requirements to each university, and the availability of the job market. In addition, the exercises used during counseling sessions are often revised and updated by counselors for the ultimate benefit of the students. Activities: One of the important activities prepared by the Career Guidance Department is the Career Fair which is an annual activity held at Beirut Hall and includes all the universities licensed by the Lebanese Government as well as some higher technical vocational institutions at the TS level and a number of economic institutions. The aim of the Career Fair is to allow secondary students in Lebanon to get in direct contact with universities and vocational institutions to explore the majors available in Lebanon and ask their representatives about the nature of majors, years of study, language of study, tuition fees, financial aids, and other questions. Economic institutions, on the other hand, inform students about the world of work and the job opportunities available for them after graduation. Thousands of students visit the Career Fair annually from different Lebanese regions. During the Career Fair, the University and Technical Majors Guides are distributed to visiting students as well as evaluation forms to be filled by students and participants to get feedback in order to improve the performance of the career guidance team and the participants to enhance the benefit of students Latest Studies: The career guidance team also prepared a number of studies over the years among which the latest studies include: 1- “Factors that Influence Students’ Career Choices” to find out the effect of parents over their children’s career choices. 2- Two studies “Students Career Preferences in the year 1999 ” and “Students Career Preferences in the year 2000 ” to compare students’ initial and final career choices before and after career counseling to find out the effect of career guidance on students’ career decision-making. 3- The “UNESCO project” which is a study about career guidance in Lebanon prepared by the career guidance team for the UNESCO. It discusses the historical background of career guidance in the world and the need of the youth to it. It also explains the general principles of career guidance at the secondary level in the Lebanese education curricula. Moreover, the study discusses career guidance at Hariri Foundation and the nature of its work both theoretically and practically. On the other hand, the career guidance team prepares a monthly newsletter that includes all the news on career guidance as well as other educational, cultural, social, and environmental issues. The career guidance team also visits exhibitions, universities’ campus, vocational and economic institutions, and bookstores, besides attending conferences, panels, and organizing lectures and counseling sessions outside Beirut. For career development purposes, workshops are held annually for counselors to revise all the theories of career counseling and enhance and improve their performance during counseling sessions.
